Morgan Stanley’s 6 Energy Sector Picks in India: The Themes Driving the Sector
Morgan Stanley has identified six Indian energy and power companies it prefers across refining, upstream exploration, power generation and electricity infrastructure. The brokerage’s view is based on resilient energy demand, refining margins, domestic exploration activity and rising electricity consumption.
India’s Energy Demand Remains Resilient
According to the Financial Express report, Morgan Stanley expects India’s energy demand to remain supported by industrial activity, cooling requirements, transportation, CNG adoption and the growing electricity needs of data centres.
The brokerage estimates underlying energy consumption across Asia could grow at a 2.7% CAGR between 2026 and 2030, with India remaining an important contributor to regional demand.
Morgan Stanley’s Six Preferred Energy Stocks
The six companies highlighted by Morgan Stanley are:
HPCL - Refining margins and resilient fuel demand
BPCL - Refining cycle and domestic fuel demand
ONGC - Offshore exploration and upstream reforms
Oil India - Domestic exploration and production
Adani Power - Rising electricity demand and power generation
Adani Energy Solutions - Growing power and grid infrastructure requirements
These names represent different segments of the energy value chain rather than a single commodity or business model.
Refining Cycle Supports HPCL and BPCL
Refining is a major part of Morgan Stanley’s energy outlook.
The brokerage expects Asian gross refining margins to remain above mid-cycle levels, supported by resilient fuel demand, limited capacity additions and supply constraints. It also expects India to account for approximately 192,000 barrels per day of incremental refined-product demand between 2025 and 2029.
This forms part of the reasoning behind Morgan Stanley’s positive view on HPCL and BPCL.
ONGC and Oil India: Domestic Exploration in Focus
The upstream segment is another key theme.
Morgan Stanley highlighted government initiatives aimed at increasing domestic exploration and energy production. These include an approximately $8.9 billion offshore exploration programme, along with measures covering royalty structures, deepwater blocks and coal-bed methane acreage.
For companies such as ONGC and Oil India, increased exploration and production activity could influence reserves, output and future investment requirements.
Power Demand Brings Adani Power Into Focus
India's electricity consumption is another major theme in Morgan Stanley's analysis.
The brokerage's data showed 10% year-on-year growth in India's power demand in FY27 year-to-date, while it also expects data centres to become an increasingly significant source of electricity demand.
Adani Power is therefore included in Morgan Stanley's preferred list as part of its power-generation thesis.
Grid Infrastructure and Adani Energy Solutions
The broader increase in electricity consumption also has implications for transmission and grid infrastructure.
Morgan Stanley estimates Asia's data-centre power demand could grow at around 24% CAGR between 2023 and 2030. Rising electricity consumption and infrastructure requirements are among the factors supporting its view on Adani Energy Solutions.
LNG Demand Remains an Important Theme
Another notable observation is the resilience of India's LNG consumption despite higher prices.
Morgan Stanley expects India's LNG demand to increase by approximately 2 million tonnes per annum over the next three years, with city gas and refinery demand playing important roles.
This highlights how India's energy transition is involving multiple fuel sources simultaneously, rather than a simple shift from one energy source to another.
Government Spending Could Reshape the Energy Landscape
Morgan Stanley highlighted several government-supported programmes covering offshore exploration, compressed biogas, coal gasification and biofuels.
The brokerage estimates total announced support across these initiatives at around $16.9 billion, with offshore exploration representing the largest component.
Such programmes could influence domestic production, import dependence and capital expenditure across different parts of the energy ecosystem.
What Investors Should Watch
The Morgan Stanley analysis highlights several broader themes for India's energy sector:
1. Energy demand: Industrial activity, transportation and data centres could continue supporting consumption.
2. Refining margins: Capacity additions and global fuel demand will remain important for refiners.
3. Domestic exploration: Government policy and exploration investment could affect upstream producers.
4. Power generation: Rising electricity consumption could influence generation requirements.
5. Grid infrastructure: Data centres, industrialisation and electrification could increase transmission and distribution needs.
6. Capital allocation: Energy companies are increasingly balancing conventional energy, renewables, storage and trading activities.
The Bigger Picture
Morgan Stanley's analysis brings together three broad themes: refining and fuel demand, domestic energy production, and India's rapidly increasing electricity requirements.
The six companies highlighted by the brokerage operate across these different segments, making the report a useful snapshot of the themes currently shaping India's energy market. However, the brokerage's preferences and forecasts are its own views and can change with commodity prices, government policies, demand conditions and company-specific developments.
