Acutaas Chemicals: Can Pharma, Battery and Semiconductor Chemicals Drive the Next Growth Phase?

Acutaas Chemicals, formerly known as Ami Organics, is expanding beyond its established pharmaceutical intermediates business into battery and semiconductor chemicals. The company is aiming to build multiple growth engines while strengthening its position in high-value specialty chemicals.

Its Q2 FY27 results showed strong revenue and profit growth, supported by pharmaceutical intermediates and improved operating performance. Management also raised its full-year revenue growth guidance, reflecting confidence in the business pipeline.

The key question is whether Acutaas can sustain its earnings momentum and successfully scale its newer businesses.

1. Understanding the Business

Acutaas Chemicals manufactures specialised chemicals and advanced intermediates used in pharmaceuticals and industrial applications. Its business has three main growth areas.

Pharmaceutical Intermediates and CDMO: This is the company's core business. It manufactures advanced intermediates used in drug production and undertakes contract development and manufacturing opportunities for pharmaceutical customers.

Battery Chemicals: The company is developing products used in lithium-ion battery electrolytes, creating potential exposure to electric vehicles and energy storage.

Semiconductor Chemicals: Acutaas is expanding into high-purity chemicals used in semiconductor manufacturing and related applications. This business could diversify revenue over time, although customer qualification and commercial scaling remain important milestones.

2. Q2 FY27 Financial Performance

Acutaas delivered strong year-on-year growth in the quarter ended September 2026.

Figures are consolidated.

Revenue increased by 42.7%, while EBITDA grew by 84.6%. Profit after tax rose by 71.4%, indicating strong earnings growth during the quarter.

The EBITDA margin improved from 31.1% to 40.3%, reflecting stronger operating profitability. EBITDA grew considerably faster than revenue, suggesting that product mix and operating performance supported the improvement.

Sequentially, revenue increased by 32.5% and EBITDA rose by 55.6% compared with Q1 FY27.

Although the results are encouraging, sustaining this profitability as the company expands its capacity and newer businesses will be important.

3. Pharmaceutical Intermediates: The Main Growth Driver

Pharmaceutical intermediates remain the company's largest business. During Q2 FY27, this segment generated approximately ₹402 crore in revenue, growing around 53% year-on-year.

One important opportunity is darolutamide, a prostate cancer drug. Acutaas manufactures five of the seven advanced intermediates required for the drug under a long-term supply arrangement.

Management has also indicated a pipeline of approximately 8–10 additional molecules that could contribute over the next 12–18 months. New contracts are expected to begin contributing from H2 FY27.

Successful commercialisation could broaden the product portfolio and create additional revenue opportunities. Investors should monitor how quickly these molecules scale and whether growth becomes more diversified across products and customers.

4. CDMO Business: A Long-Term Growth Opportunity

The contract development and manufacturing organisation (CDMO) business is central to the company's expansion plans.

Management expects to achieve its annual CDMO revenue target of ₹1,000 crore in FY27 and has outlined a target of ₹2,000 crore by FY30.

Achieving these milestones will depend on securing new contracts, completing customer approvals and scaling manufacturing efficiently.

CDMO relationships can create opportunities for repeat business because customers require specialised manufacturing capabilities and consistent product quality. However, commercialisation timelines and contract profitability can vary.

The key factor to watch is whether Acutaas can expand CDMO revenue while maintaining margins and avoiding excessive dependence on a limited number of products.

5. Battery Chemicals: Building a New Revenue Stream

Acutaas is expanding into battery chemicals, including VC and FEC, which are used in lithium-ion battery electrolytes. Commercial shipments have started, while another product remains under pilot validation.

Demand for these products could benefit from the development of electric vehicles, battery manufacturing and energy storage systems.

However, growth will depend on customer approvals, product quality, pricing and the ability to scale production. The company will need to demonstrate that this segment can contribute meaningful revenue rather than remain a small part of the business.

Investors should track commercial volumes, new customer additions and the profitability of this segment as it develops.

6. Semiconductor Chemicals: A Longer-Term Opportunity

The semiconductor chemicals business could provide Acutaas with access to a specialised market where product purity and quality standards are critical.

The company has inaugurated its South Korea manufacturing facility and submitted qualification batches to customers. Commercial ramp-up is expected to become important from FY28.

Customer qualification can take time in semiconductor manufacturing, so initial progress should not be confused with large-scale commercial revenue.

Successful qualification and repeat orders could diversify the company's revenue base. The pace of commercialisation, facility utilisation and customer adoption will determine how quickly this opportunity translates into earnings.

7. Capital Expenditure and Capacity Expansion

Acutaas has planned capital expenditure of approximately ₹300 crore for FY27, including around ₹100 crore for electronic-grade chemicals.

Management expects the electronic-grade chemicals facility to achieve at least three times asset turns, with production expected to begin in H1 FY29.

At Ankleshwar Unit 2, utilisation stood at around 30% in Q2 FY27. Management is targeting approximately 40% by the end of FY27, with substantial utilisation expected by FY28.

Higher utilisation can improve fixed-cost absorption and support profitability. However, this depends on demand, customer approvals, efficient production and working-capital management.

Investors should monitor capacity utilisation and the returns generated from the company's investments.

8. FY27 Guidance: Management Raises Expectations

Following the strong quarterly performance, management raised its FY27 revenue growth guidance from 25% to approximately 30%. It also increased its EBITDA margin guidance to 38–40%.

The revised guidance reflects confidence in pharmaceutical intermediates and the company's growth pipeline.

However, achieving these targets will depend on execution, new molecule contributions, specialty chemicals performance and capacity utilisation. The coming quarters will help establish whether the company can deliver on its revised expectations.

9. Key Risks to Monitor

  • Pharmaceutical dependence: Pharma remains the dominant revenue contributor, making successful diversification important.

  • Customer concentration: Dependence on individual molecules or customers can increase earnings volatility.

  • Specialty chemicals weakness: Specialty chemicals revenue declined around 20% year-on-year in Q2 FY27. Management attributed the weakness partly to the phase-out of older commodity products and a temporary shipment pause involving a US customer; shipments have since resumed.

  • Capacity utilisation: New facilities may take time to reach optimal operating levels.

  • Execution risk: Delays in customer approvals or commercialisation could affect growth targets.

  • Valuation risk: Strong earnings growth does not necessarily mean the stock is attractively valued at its current market price.

10. What Investors Should Watch Next

The key indicators to track over the coming quarters are:

  • Progress against revised FY27 revenue and EBITDA margin guidance.

  • Commercial contributions from new CDMO molecules in H2 FY27.

  • Continued growth in pharmaceutical intermediates.

  • Rising commercial volumes from battery chemicals.

  • Customer qualifications and commercial orders from the semiconductor chemicals facility.

  • Capacity utilisation at Ankleshwar Unit 2.

  • Cash generation and returns from capital expenditure.

These factors will help investors assess whether recent earnings growth is sustainable.

Conclusion

Acutaas Chemicals has delivered a strong Q2 FY27, supported by robust pharmaceutical demand, higher margins and improved earnings. The upward revision to management guidance adds to the positive operating outlook.

Its long-term opportunity lies in scaling the CDMO business and establishing battery and semiconductor chemicals as additional revenue streams. However, these newer businesses still need to demonstrate meaningful commercial scale, while pharmaceutical intermediates remain the company's primary growth driver.

Sustained profitability, successful capacity utilisation and disciplined capital allocation will be essential to delivering long-term value. Investors should evaluate execution, earnings quality and valuation alongside the company's growth opportunities.
